According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Chicago has 1,084,221 African American residents. African Americans represent 37.4% of Chicago's total population. The total population of Chicago's metropolitan area in 2000 was estimated at 9.2 million. The metropolitan area's current African American population is estimated at around 1.7 million. More than 1.1 million of the Chicago area's 1.7 million African Americans currently have and use the Internet as a major resource to identify products and services they wish to purchase.
Chicago's Black Business Climate
Chicago is one of the nation's top cities for African American businesses and professionals. Accourding to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, Chicago has 64,839 African American owned businesses. This ranks Chicago fourth in the nation as the city with the largest number of African American owned businesses.
